Letters to a Young Manager

May I have a copy?, #526
LTYM >

Please note that this letter is in-process; the following are my notes

Dear Adam,
***
I told this story to Sam Oh in Aug. 2019. Also see other angle on this in #112

Wolfgang Zucker and my ontology paper: how the discussion over tea on his porch helped write my paper. Recording the discussion, Q&A, and playing it back gave me the insights into the theme of my paper. I got an A, and he asked for a copy.

I remembered this 45 years later.

In response to this story and the ratio of praise to criticism question I asked, Sam told story of the one professor in his PhD program who pointed to one of Sam’s ideas in his thesis proposal as “this is really great”. While others pointed only to the problems/issues. He ended up writing about the one praised idea, and he won a best thesis award.
***
Sincerely yours,
Ed
