Letters to a Young Manager

No one ever got fired for betting on IBM, #354
LTYM >

Please note that this letter is in-process; the following are my notes

***
When I first became a manager, IBM was the dominant technology company. An old adage was that "no one ever got fired for betting on IBM". A generation later this was Microsoft. Riding the coattails of the dominant, successful player is often a wise strategy, (See Trout & Ries, "Horse Sense). Our Office365 bet on its growing family of apps is an example. But riding too close can mean lock-in, falling off when the horse abruptly slows down (getting trampled is a bitch)
