Letters to a Young Manager

Can you be better than history?, #164
LTYM >

Please note that this letter is in-process; the following are my notes

***
Doug Smith's practice of taking a ruler to the history revenue graphs and continuing a straight-line trend to the future. He would question sales forecasts that were above the line, asking "what substantial new thing will happen that makes you believe you can do better than history?"

Also look at George Santanyana's statement that those who ignore history are condemned to repeat it.

The flip side is that history is a rear view mirror and rarely forecasts the future.
