Letters to a Young Manager

The Education Disconnect, #538
LTYM >

Please note that this letter is in-process; the following are my notes

Dear Adam,
***
80% of higher education teachers feel they prepare students for the workplace, but only 20% of CEOs agree. It's worse than this.

"A troubling 96 percent of chief academic officers at colleges and universities are confident that they prepare their students to be successful but it seems that employers don’t agree and they aren’t satisfied as 89 percent of them don’t think college grads are job-ready." --Betty Vandenbosch, University Business, October 30, 2019
https://universitybusiness.com/connecting-higher-education-to-workplace-readiness/

"A whopping 96% of chief academic officers at higher education institutions say their institution is "very or somewhat" effective at preparing students for the world of work. That's an awful lot of confidence, considering how U.S. business leaders and the American public judge higher education institutions on this same measure. Gallup found that a mere 14% of Americans strongly agree that college graduates are well-prepared for success in the workplace. And barely one in 10 (11%) business leaders strongly agree that college graduates have the skills and competencies that their workplaces need. There is clearly a massive disconnect between higher education and the marketplace in terms of what it means to be prepared for work." --Brandon Busteed, "Higher Education's Work Preparation Paradox," Gallup, February 25, 2014, https://news.gallup.com/opinion/gallup/173249/higher-education-work-preparation-paradox.aspx

Top 3 skills employers say they need:

"Problem solving, team working and communication are the skills that are currently most in demand in the workplace," "Driving the skills agenda: Preparing students for the future," The Economist, 2015, p. 3, https://static.googleusercontent.com/media/edu.google.com/en//pdfs/skills-of-the-future-report.pdf
